वैशंपायन उवाच ततः क्षत्ता च राजा च भीष्मश्च सह बन्धुभिः ददुः श्राद्धं तदा पाण्डोः स्वधामृतमयं तदा
Vaiśampāyana said: Later, the kshatta, the king, Bhīṣma and the relatives performed Pāṇḍu's śraddhā, offering the immortal cake.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: बाद में, क्षत्रिय, राजा, भीष्म और रिश्तेदारों ने अमर केक की पेशकश करते हुए, पांडु का श्राद्ध किया।
The Kuru-s and the chief Brāhmana-s were offered a feast in their thousands. A large number of gems and the best of villages were given to the chief Brāhmana-s.
हजारों की संख्या में कुरु और प्रमुख ब्राह्मणों को भोज दिया गया। प्रमुख ब्राह्मणों को बड़ी संख्या में रत्न और सर्वोत्तम गाँव दिये गये।
When the period of uncleanliness was over, the Pāṇḍava-s, bulls among the Bhārata lineage, were taken by the citizens to the city of Varanasahrya.
जब अस्वच्छता की अवधि समाप्त हो गई, तो पांडवों, भरत वंश के बैल, को नागरिकों द्वारा वारणसहर्य शहर में ले जाया गया।
All the citizens of the town and the country still lamented for that bull of the Bhārata lineage, as if they had lost a relative.
नगर और देश के सभी नागरिक अब भी भरत वंश के उस बैल के लिए विलाप कर रहे थे, मानो उन्होंने कोई रिश्तेदार खो दिया हो।
When the śraddhā ceremony was over, Vyāsa saw that the people were still immersed in grief. He spoke to his mother, who was also immersed in grief.
जब श्राद्ध समारोह समाप्त हो गया, तो व्यास ने देखा कि लोग अभी भी दुःख में डूबे हुए थे। उन्होंने अपनी मां से बात की, वह भी दुख में डूबी हुई थीं.
"Happy times are over. Terrible times lie ahead. The earth has lost her youth and every day is more sinful than the preceding one.
"ख़ुशी का समय ख़त्म हो चुका है। आगे भयानक समय आने वाला है। पृथ्वी ने अपनी जवानी खो दी है और हर दिन पिछले दिन से भी अधिक पापपूर्ण है।"

बहुमायासमाकीर्णो नानादोषसमाकुलः लुप्तधर्मक्रियाचारो घोरः कालो भविष्यति
A terrible time is coming — full of many delusions, thick with many vices and with the rituals of dharma destroyed.
एक भयानक समय आ रहा है - अनेक भ्रमों से भरा हुआ, अनेक विकारों से भरा हुआ और धर्म के अनुष्ठान नष्ट हो जाने वाला।
Give everything up and go and live in a hermitage. You will not be able to witness the destruction of your sons and lineage."
सब कुछ त्याग दो और जाकर किसी आश्रम में रहो। तुम अपने पुत्रों और वंश का विनाश नहीं देख पाओगे।”
She agreed to this. She entered her daughter-in-law's quarters and said, "O Ambikā! O fortunate one! I hear that as a result of the evil acts committed by your son, this Bhārata lineage, along with all its relatives and grandsons, will be destroyed.
इस पर वह राजी हो गयी. उसने अपनी बहू के घर में प्रवेश किया और कहा, "हे अंबिका! हे भाग्यशाली! मैंने सुना है कि आपके बेटे द्वारा किए गए बुरे कृत्यों के परिणामस्वरूप, यह भरत वंश अपने सभी रिश्तेदारों और पोते-पोतियों सहित नष्ट हो जाएगा।

तत्कौसल्यामिमामार्तां पुत्रशोकाभिपीडिताम् वनमादाय भद्रं ते गच्छावो यदि मन्यसे
I will take Kausalyā, who is still grieving from the death of her son, and leave for the forest. Come if you want."
मैं कौशल्या को, जो अभी भी अपने पुत्र की मृत्यु से दुःखी है, लेकर वन में चला जाऊँगा। चाहो तो आ जाओ।”
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Ambikā consented. Taking Bhīṣma's permission, Satyavatī, the one who was rigid in her vows, went off to the forest with both her daughters-in-law.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अम्बिका ने सहमति व्यक्त की। भीष्म की आज्ञा लेकर अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ सत्यवती अपनी दोनों बहुओं के साथ वन में चली गयी।
O supreme among those of the Bhārata lineage! There the queens performed terrible austerities. O king! They gave up their bodies and went on their journey.
हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! वहाँ रानियों ने घोर तपस्या की। हे राजा! उन्होंने अपना शरीर त्याग दिया और अपनी यात्रा पर निकल पड़े।

अवाप्नुवन्त वेदोक्तान्संस्कारान्पाण्डवास्तदा अवर्धन्त च भोगांस्ते भुञ्जानाः पितृवेश्मनि
After observing all the rites prescribed in the Veda-s, the Pāṇḍava-s then began to grow up in their father's house, enjoying a life of pleasure.
वेदों में निर्धारित सभी संस्कारों का पालन करने के बाद, पांडव अपने पिता के घर में बड़े होने लगे और आनंदपूर्वक जीवन का आनंद लेने लगे।
When they played childish games in their father's house with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, they excelled over them—in running fast,
जब वे अपने पिता के घर में धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के साथ बचकानी खेल खेलते थे, तो वे तेज दौड़ने में उनसे आगे निकल जाते थे,
in hitting targets, in eating and in raising dust. Bhīmasena defeated all of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons.

Playfully, he grabbed them by the hair above their ears. He caught them by the heads when they fought with the Pāṇḍava-s.
खेल-खेल में उसने उन्हें उनके कानों के ऊपर के बालों से पकड़ लिया। जब वे पांडवों से लड़े तो उन्होंने उनके सिर पकड़ लिये।
Alone and with the least effort, Vṛkodara oppressed those 101 sons, who possessed great energy.
अकेले और कम से कम प्रयास से, वृकोदर ने उन 101 पुत्रों पर अत्याचार किया, जिनके पास महान ऊर्जा थी।
The strongest of the strong would kick them with his feet. He would throw them down on the ground and break their thighs, heads and shoulders.

hen playing in the water, he would sometimes catch ten of them in his arms and hold them down in the water, letting them go only when they were about to drown.

When they climbed a tree to gather fruit, Bhīmā would kick the tree with his feet and make it shake.
जब वे फल तोड़ने के लिए एक पेड़ पर चढ़ते थे, तो भीम अपने पैरों से पेड़ को लात मारता था और उसे हिला देता था।
Shaken by the force, the tree would whirl around and swiftly fall down on the ground with its fruit, frightening the princes.
बल से हिलने पर, पेड़ इधर-उधर घूमता और राजकुमारों को भयभीत करते हुए तेजी से अपने फल के साथ जमीन पर गिर जाता।

In fights, speed and martial exercises, the princes were never able to get the better of Vṛkodara in any competition.
लड़ाई, गति और मार्शल अभ्यास में, राजकुमार कभी भी किसी भी प्रतियोगिता में वृकोदर से बेहतर प्रदर्शन करने में सक्षम नहीं थे।

Thus, in any competition, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons began to hate Vṛkodara, even though he bore no ill will towards them, since he was only a child.
इस प्रकार, किसी भी प्रतियोगिता में, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र वृकोदर से नफरत करने लगे, भले ही उसके मन में उनके प्रति कोई दुर्भावना नहीं थी, क्योंकि वह केवल एक बच्चा था।
Bhīmasena's great strength became well known. On learning this, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's powerful son revealed the evil side of his nature.

He was wicked and inclined towards evil. Out of delusion and greed for riches, an evil thought occurred to him.

"Kuntī's son Vṛkodara, the second of the Pāṇḍava-s, is the best in strength. I must find some trick so as to kill him.
"पांडवों में से दूसरे, कुंती के पुत्र वृकोदर, ताकत में सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। मुझे उसे मारने के लिए कोई युक्ति ढूंढनी होगी।"
Then I will overpower his younger brother and his elder brother Yudhiṣṭhira. I will tie them up and reign as the sovereign of the earth."
तब मैं उसके छोटे भाई और उसके बड़े भाई युधिष्ठिर पर अधिकार कर लूँगा। मैं उन्हें बाँध लूँगा और पृथ्वी पर प्रभुता करके राज्य करूँगा।”

एवं स निश्चयं पापः कृत्वा दुर्योधनस्तदा नित्यमेवान्तरप्रेक्षी भीमस्यासीन्महात्मनः
Having made his mind up about this evil act, Duryodhana was always on the lookout for a chance to get at the great-souled Bhīmā.
इस दुष्ट कृत्य के बारे में अपना मन बना लेने के बाद, दुर्योधन हमेशा महान आत्मा वाले भीम को पाने के मौके की तलाश में रहता था।

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जल क्रीड़ाओं के लिए उन्होंने कपास और ऊन से एक अद्भुत और विशाल क्रीड़ा भवन का निर्माण करवाया।

प्रमाणकोट्यामुद्देशं स्थलं किंचिदुपेत्य च क्रीडावसाने सर्वे ते शुचिवस्त्राः स्वलंकृताः सर्वकामसमृद्धं तदन्नं बुभुजिरे शनैः
It was full of every object of desire. It was at a place known as Pramāṇakoṭi and slightly above the waterline. When the games were over, they would dress themselves in fresh garments, wear ornaments and quickly eat.
वह इच्छा की प्रत्येक वस्तु से परिपूर्ण था। यह प्रमाणकोटि नामक स्थान पर था और जलरेखा से थोड़ा ऊपर था। जब खेल ख़त्म हो जाते थे, तो वे ताज़ा कपड़े पहनते थे, गहने पहनते थे और जल्दी से खाना खाते थे।
When day was over, the valorous Kuru princes would be exhausted from their games and would rest in that sports house.
जब दिन ढल जाता, तो वीर कुरु राजकुमार अपने खेल से थक जाते और उस क्रीड़ा भवन में विश्राम करते।
The powerful Bhīmā always prevailed over the other princes in water sports. But on one occasion, he was tired at there having been an excess of exercise. He wished to sleep in Pramāṇakoṭi and climbed up the bank and found a spot.
जलक्रीड़ा में शक्तिशाली भीम हमेशा अन्य राजकुमारों पर भारी पड़ते थे। लेकिन एक अवसर पर, वह अत्यधिक व्यायाम करने के कारण थक गया था। वह प्रमाणकोटि में सोना चाहता था और किनारे पर चढ़ गया और एक जगह ढूंढ ली।
He was clad in a white garment. He was tired and he was under the influence of drink. O king! The Pāṇḍava was tired and slept like one who was dead.
वह सफेद वस्त्र पहने हुए था। वह थका हुआ था और शराब के नशे में था. हे राजा! पांडव थक गए थे और मरे हुए व्यक्ति की तरह सो गए।
Then Duryodhana quietly tied him up with thongs made of creepers. He rolled him down from the land into the swift and deep waters.
तब दुर्योधन ने चुपचाप उसे लताओं से बनी पेटी से बाँध दिया। उसने उसे ज़मीन पर से तेज़ और गहरे पानी में लुढ़का दिया।
Regaining his consciousness, Kaunteya tore apart all the bonds. Bhīmā, supreme among those who wield arms, arose from the water.
होश में आकर कौन्तेय ने सारे बंधन तोड़ डाले। हथियार चलाने वालों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ भीम पानी से उठे।

सुप्तं चापि पुनः सर्पैस्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैर्महाविषैः कुपितैर्दंशयामास सर्वेष्वेवाङ्गमर्मसु
On another occasion when Bhīmā was again sleeping, he brought many snakes — sharp in teeth, immensely poisonous, angry and virulent. He made them bite him in all the soft spots of his body.
एक अन्य अवसर पर जब भीम फिर से सो रहा था, वह बहुत सारे साँप ले आया - दाँतों में तेज़, बेहद जहरीले, क्रोधी और विषैले। उसने उनसे अपने शरीर के सभी कोमल स्थानों पर कटवाया।
But even when they bit him in the soft spots, they could not bring him down. They could not penetrate his skin, because the broadchested one was too tough.
लेकिन जब उन्होंने उसके कोमल स्थानों पर काटा, तब भी वे उसे नीचे नहीं ला सके। वे उसकी त्वचा में प्रवेश नहीं कर सके, क्योंकि चौड़ी छाती बहुत सख्त थी।
When Bhīmā woke up, he killed all the snakes. He and his companions became very careful from that time onwards.
जब भीम उठे तो उन्होंने सभी साँपों को मार डाला। उस समय से वह और उसके साथी बहुत सावधान हो गये।
He also had poison mixed in Bhīmasena's food. This was freshly made kālakūṭa poison, so virulent that it made the hair on the body stand up.
उसने भीमसेन के भोजन में जहर भी मिला दिया था। यह ताज़ा बनाया गया कालकूट विष था, इतना विषैला कि इससे शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो जाते थे।
On this occasion, the Vaiśya's son alerted Pṛthā's sons, so as to ensure their welfare. But though Vṛkodara ate this, it had no effect on him.
इस अवसर पर, वैश्य के पुत्र ने पृथा के पुत्रों को सचेत किया, ताकि उनका कल्याण सुनिश्चित किया जा सके। हालाँकि वृकोदर ने इसे खाया, लेकिन इसका उन पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा।

Though the poison was extremely virulent and was meant to kill Bhīmā, Bhīmā digested and tolerated it.
यद्यपि जहर अत्यंत विषैला था और भीम को मारने के लिए था, भीम ने इसे पचा लिया और सहन कर लिया।
Then Duryodhana, Karṇa and Subala's son Śākuni tried many other means to kill the Pāṇḍava-s.
तब दुर्योधन, कर्ण और सुबाला के पुत्र शकुनि ने पांडवों को मारने के लिए कई अन्य उपाय किए।

पाण्डवाश्चापि तत्सर्वं प्रत्यजानन्नरिंदमाः उद्भावनमकुर्वन्तो विदुरस्य मते स्थिताः
However, the Pāṇḍava-s, scorchers of their enemies, got to know about all of these. As advised by Vidūra, they never revealed all this.
